I had student loan debts that I fully paid for five years ago. I have no bank account but I have a steady job that pays well. I want credit but don't know where to start. I heard there were online credit cards that you paid for in advance (sort of like a bank account?) before you make your online purchases. What can I do & what choices do I have?

It sounds like you may be referring to a stored value card? This is not technically a credit card, but more like a debit card with a credit balance on it.

I would recommend that you try to apply for a regular credit card and see what happens. CreditCardMenu.com has a nice search menu to assist you in choosing a card. Look on the left side margin for the "search" icon and click to check it out.
