i am an international student and i was wondering how i can get a credit card. i have a checking account and an SSN but at present i am not working.

Try applying for a card geared towards students.
By using the "search" menu option on the left, and checking off the "student" box option, you'll be able to find many such cards.

Remember, don't apply for multiple cards, too many inquiries on your credit reports will give you a problem. Choose the one card that looks the best for your needs and take it from there.
