Topic Perment resident? Go to previous topic Go to next topic Go to higher level

By Vic On 05/01/04

Hi.
I am an international student in US now. I have read other posts abt international citizens applying for US credit cards. I have SSN, a US credit card.
But I just wanna ask, when credit card issuers ask "are you a permenant US resident?" what are they referring to? I have living in US now but I am on a student visa, do you think I am still considered to be "permenant US resident"?
Thanks a lot!
Vic

Vic,

Most of the time, banks themselves are not too specific about it. Technically, you may not be a "permanent resident" (to the INS), but the IRS considers you one (since your "tax" home is in the US).

Responding to your question, you can definitely consider yourself a permanent resident if you intend to stay in the US for an indefinite period of time - for example, if you intend to seek a job here after you graduate. The specific immigration status that will allow you to do so is of secondary importance.
