Topic Married to US citizen, not citizen yet Go to previous topic Go to next topic Go to higher level

I am a non-US citizen, but married to a US citizen with bad credit (he won't be listed on my credit). I am applying for permanent residency, but only have a work permit thus far and have recently attained a SSN. I have a new job that pays well, but have only been there two weeks. SO MANY QUESTIONS! Will anyone grant a credit card to a non-US-resident who is applying for residency? Also, will they grant me a credit card only being on the job for less than a month? If not, how long should I work at my new job before I apply? I DO have a US bank account that has been active for about five years, using my Social Insurance Number from Canada. How will that affect me? Sorry for all the questions, but my husband and I would like to establish credit through my name, as it is untainted. Thank you in advance for your replies!

technically, since you have an SSN, are a de-facto resident and also have a job, all minimum requirements for obtaining credit are met.

however, since you've only been at your job for a few weeks and presumably don't have other credit lines, you may have difficulty getting approved.

my suggestion would be to try to get a "secured" card and work your way up from there... be sure to read the fine print, though - such cards typically carry various fees.

good luck!

P.S. Unfortunately, your Canadian SIN is irrelevant in the US just like SSN's are irrelevant in Canada. You have to start from scratch.
