Hello, my daughter is 17 and will be 18 in June. She is a junior in high school. She currently has two jobs. She works 30 hours per week. She would like to start to establish some kind of credit. Is she old enough and how would she go about doing it? She has a checking account but currently no savings. Should she open a savings account? Right now she saves her money at home. Thanks for your time and help. Janice

How long does it take to get an answer here? It has been two weeks now.

Janice. On the age question: most banks require cardholders to be 18 (although I remember a frequent poster here who claimed he had cards even though he was younger).

Building your daughter's credit history is another matter altogether. Most likely, she won't be approved for any unsecured offers in the beginning. She can either get a secured card, get a co-signed card, a store card, or (perhaps the most natural) enroll full-time in a college. The latter qualifies her for student products which are easier to get approved for.
