Hi, Im an immigrant into the USA, I married my husband who is American. The prob is that I have no credit history what so ever. My husband's credit wasnt too great, but somehow we managed to get a $9,000 AUto loan with our Credit Union, which was great.
However, after 8 months of paying that loan (Never once late, and actually its paid about 4 months ahead) I wanted to start building credit a bit more, next step seemed obvious...a credit card. Im very good with money, so I applied at our Credit Union...but was denied, I tried Capital One (who I was told will accept almost anyone) and I was declined again. I have a checking and a savings acct with over $1000 in it. I thought maybe a secured credit card, but it seems no one is doing them anymore. So Im kinda stuck, no one will give me a card. Im 20,and any credit history I should have is positive (Car loan), yet no one will accept my applications, even tho you hear the stories of ppl with TERRIBLE credit getting them. Any idea's on how I can get a break? Or how I can go about building my credit?

Thanks
D

I would recommend the Orchard Bank secured or unsecured products. Check them out in the browse section @ http://www.creditcardmenu.com, under "cards for new or damaged credit"

Orchard Bank is part of Household Bank, which means that you can upgrade to a number of cards once you establish credit with them.

Good Luck.

The problem with the car loan is that I would bet that it is in your husband's name and your the co-applicant. This is taken into account on credit reports and companies can see that you still have no credit of your own.

Your best bet to establish credit is to go to your credit union and get a secured installment loan. Put up $500 and get a $500 loan at a low rate and then pay it off in 3 months. This will establish a credit history in just your name. After you have done this then I would be very surprised if your credit union declined you a credit card.

My husband prob is the primary on our loan, but we are equal signers on it, why would it not report equally to a credit berau?

I work for a Bank, and I asked about it, everyone I have asked that does loans states that they report equally, and hadnt heard otherwise? ahhhhhh

Do most banks do secured installment loans?

Thanks

Thanks for the idea on the secured loan tho. I called my Credit Union and they will do it on any amount of money.

You can tell your husband to add you as an authorized user of some of his cards. Wait three or four months and then apply for Mobil and Target.

Or You also could try for Cap One secured or FCNB Secured.

also I suggest you to visit the creditnet board site

Thanks for the help everyone.

Hubby and I went into our credit union this morning and got approved for a Line Of Credit. We didnt have to secure anything, and hearing the words "its been approved" were just great!!! Im going to work from here and after about 5-6 months of paying this one, try for a retail card like Sears, walmart etc.

Thanks again.
