Topic Blue from AMEX

I am with AMEX for three years now having their gold card currently. I would like to aply for their blue card. Should I call them to cancel my gold card and ask for blue card or would it be better to aply for blue and cancel gold card later?

Either way would work fine. Most experts do recommend that you cancel your credit cards in writing.
