I recently have been reviewing a credit providers past bills on an account that they had closed for being 60 days past due. They have been charging past due fees and overlimit fees after the account has been closed. Is this typical and legal? I thought that when the account is closed then the balance at that point is what is due and only the interest applies. Please advise.
Thank you

You need to read the cardholder agreement. I believe that the account is not really closed until you have a $0 balance. Therefore the account is really "frozen" because of the late payments, and the fees probably still apply.

Colin is correct on this, an account is not closed until the balance is actually zero. Until then you need to make all payments on the account and keep it below the credit limit. Also you are still liable for all interest on the balances as well. You are best served calling the company, telling them that you made a mistake and seeing if they will waive any fees for you, of course you might also have to make a payment to show good faith on your part as well.
