Do you have a social security number? Hopefully the answer is yes.
You may want to establish a checking and savings account if you haven't already done so. Card issuers like to see signs of stability. If you have a stable permanent address, a bank account, and a stable job you will be viewed more favorably by card issuers. Because you are a student I would recommend that you try for a student credit card. We have the Capital One student card and the American Express student card on the Credit Card Menu.

I've got one for you. I've been stable and employed for two years, I'm 30 years old, and applying to graduate school for the fall. Before that, I traveled extensively, held few permanent addresses, and owe a shitty hospital in Montana $300 from 6 years ago. I'd rather not pay them, but I could, other than that I have no negative credit, just empty spaces. I'm ready to grow up now, so I need some debt. What do you reccomend?

I would recommend that you check your credit report to make sure the hospital charge is the only negative mark. If this happened 6 years ago, it should be removed from your report in a year. Also, you could talk to the hospital and see if they would agree to remove the item from your credit report in exchange for payment. Have you applied for any credit cards? If you clear this up now you may be in a good position to apply for a card because you now have a stable job etc.. If you wait until next year this charge will be cleared off your report and you may be able to get a student
card... Good Luck.

Try providian...They issue you credit cards with no credit history or bad credit history.
by dimepiece6 On 07/01/2000
do you have their website.

Providian's card is linked from this site (the product name is "Aria")

i could be wrong, but I am NOT SURE they'll be the easiest card to get though... they seem to emphasize Intro APR and probably go after people with already established credit.

In my opinion, Capital One Classic or NextCard may be better as far as chances of being approved (although I admit I've never applied for either - just judging from who they're targeting)...

just my 2c

i disagree - they have counter-offer cards so if you're not approved for the best one you are still likely to be approved for Visa Portrait or the next one down.. question is what APR you're willing to pay after intro APR expires

another_guy has a good point. Capital One does specialize in people with imperfect credit.

Be very careful if you do decide to renegotiate or payoff your old debt with the hospital. If you make a payment at this late date, under certain circumstances, it could start the whole 7 year timeclock over again. It might be best to wait it out for one more year and let the negative mark drop off your record.
