Topic Made a mistake in moving! Go to previous topic Go to next topic Go to higher level

By MsMath On 12/21/01

Could someone please help me here. We just moved in august to a new state, and we had a credit card that was being automatically deducted from our checking account. Unfortunately, when we moved and let that account dwindle, we forgot to call the credit card company and tell them to stop the autopay.

So, to make a long story short, we called the compnay as soon as we got a major finance charge for insufficient funds. We admit to that first mistake being ours. We then told them to stop the autopay. Then when it happened again, and my husband called again, they said that I was the one who had to call to stop the autopay since I was the primary cardholder. So then I called and stopped it. I was so disappointed in the customer service that I called and cancelled the card and told them to put that it was cancelled at my request.

Now, i have tried to get another credit card and I was denied. Will this one mistake that we made mean that I won't be able to get a credit card again. My credit history is impeccable until now - never a late payment, student loans paid off, etc. I don't care about the 2 finance charges, I just want my good credit back.

What should I do?

What was the reason the new issuer declined your application? You should verify why you were denied for the new credit card, and get a copy of your credit report to see what is showing up. You can obtain a free copy of your report because you were denied.

Negative information remains on your credit history for seven years. If you were denied because of negative info on your credit report from the autopay situation, you should see if the issuer will reverse this information, because their customer service appears to have contributed to the problem. It may have been easier to work with the credit card issuer if you did not cancel the card, but it is still worth a try.

If you are not able to get anywhere with this issuer, you should start re-building your credit history with another card. Make sure you avoid being declined for a number of cards in a short period of time. This will make the situation worse. A good choice may be the GetSmart card from Providian. The APR is customized to match your credit history, which should mean you will be accepted. When you are ready to apply for another card check this card and more out in the browse section of Creditcardmenu.com

Good luck.

Also try and be nice and Calm when you call the issuers Customer Service, the Rep are human and Funny thing is when people scream at them they tend to phase the person screaming out and help you solve nothing. I am guilty of that every day, but if your nice I will do everything in my power to be nice right back.
Good luck
Donnie
