Topic Moved from the UK and need a US cc Go to previous topic Go to next topic Go to higher level

I have just moved over to the US from the UK, where I have had credit cards for the last 10 yrs. I am really struggling to get a credit card because I have no history and no one seems willing to check my UK history!
I am looking for a regular credit card, which I pay off every month, but one that does not require a down payment/deposit. Can anyone suggest one?

There have been several posts like this, but the advice is always the same:

1) You need a social security number. This is what your credit history will be tied to - UK stuff is not going to be part of it.

2) Go to your local bank (where you have your checking/savings account) and try to apply for a "line of credit". Make sure they report it to the credit agencies.

3) You might want to apply for a store card or a gasoline cards. Those also typically report to one of the biggest 3 agencies.
4) Wait 3-5 months

5) Apply for a real credit card - since you are going to be paying it off, don't worry about APR, as long as it is not secured and there is no annual fee, you'll be fine.

Getsmart Visa Gold is one such card (no fee, but easier to get than others).
