What is the difference between a regular credit card, a gold credit card and a platinum credit card?

In my opinion, there isn't much. it's mostly marketing. Usually, "gold" or "platinum" cards carry bigger credit lines and lower rates, but ever since credit companies realized you they call almost any card platinum and get more applicants, they lowered their standards significantly. It's not uncommon to see 23-year olds flashing their own platinum cards.

The difference can vary by the card issuer. I have a Chase Platinum and Bank of America Visa Gold Rewards Card. They offer much better interest rates than the classic cards and higher credit lines ($8500 and $6000). You also get the warranty protection with the gold and plat cards, as well as auto rental insurance and other perks that vary from issuer to issuer. Those things don't really matter a lot to me, because I don't travel often, but for someone who travels, they could be a big benefit. It is nice to have the status of 2 premium cards from distinguished companies in the industry though. It's really all in what you're looking for. A credit card serves a basic purpose; to charge now and pay later, regardless of it being classic, gold, or platinum.
