Basically, I screwed up my credit report through college, and haven't been able to keep up with payments. Im starting a job right now that pays me 29,000 dollars a year. Unfortunately, its in Japan. I have already started a schedule to pay my cards back, where the total debt is about 2900 dollars. I should be done paying it by December. I would like a safety net in Japan though. Is there anyway I can get a card with my history, or should I wait til December.

What does it say on your credit report about the $2900? If you have negative information on your credit report that the issuer agrees to remove once you pay off the $2900 in December, it may make sense to wait. When you do apply for a credit card you may want to look at cards with customized terms, such as Nextcard, Capital One or Getsmart. They all fit the terms to match your creditworthiness.
