Does anyone know if there is any such credit card available other than a General Motors card, that you can build points towards a purchase.

I don't want to be locked into buying any specific brand.

I believe Citibank offers a product that allows you to earn points towards an auto purchase. The Citibank Driver's Edge Card. Good luck.

DaimlerChrysler recently rolled out a brand specific card as well. It's not good, however, if a Mercedes was on your short list of new cars. The program pales in comparison to GM Card, as does Citibank's Driver's Edge. Driver's Edge, however, can be used on any car. Purhcase or lease and I believe used cars, too.
