I am thinking of buying a credit card that lists categories for each of your charges.
Assume that I go to McDonalds and spend $10. I assume my statement would show a charge to McDonalds with the category restaurant.
Suppose I go to Pharmor and spend $100. $50 is for books, $20 is for groceries, $25 is for clothing and $5.00 is for office supplies. Am I correct in thinking that the statement would show $100 to Pharmor with the category merchandise, or would the statement show the various categories of expenses?

You are correct, the charges are broken down by merchant, not by the individual merchandise contained in each purchase.
Some cards offer more categories than others, and some allow you to choose your categories. Beware that some cards will charge you for the year end summary and/or may have a limited window of availability for requesting it come year's end.
