I am a minor, but I want to purchase online. Just about the only way I can see to purchase online, everywhere, is to have a credit card. Are there any credit cards available for minors?

We are not aware of a credit card that accepts applicants under eighteen. The U.S.government's recommended age requirement to hold a credit card is eighteen years. Some states mandate an age requirement of 21 years. You can be added as an authorized user to a parents account until you are of legal age. Also, if you are planning to attend college, get ready to be inundated with offers to receive credit cards.

Colin, I would like to correct you on that. There is indeed a few options one can take. You can look to your local bank and get a co-signer, or look to www.capitalone.com, and check out the high school credit card. They allow you to get credit and build your history (as I have done) if a guarantor (one who has credit and will repay the debt if you don't) will co-sign for you. Good luck. E-mail me at matty61184@home.com if you've got any other questions!

You could see about getting a debit card from your bank in your name via your checking or savings account. They work like credit cards and are accepted on-line as long as you have money in your account to cover the charge.

Thank you for the suggestion! However, I have a logistics question... Doesn't the checkout usually ask for a specific type of card? (i.e. Visa, Mastercard). Is a bank (namely Washington Mutual) likely to have an affiliation with one of these companies so that the checkout will accept the card? Thanks again

You should ask your bank directly, but I believe that all debit cards are processed through Visa or Mastercard. Thanks, Colin

When you buy something online it ask which Credit Card you are using (eg VISA, MasterCard or American Express) which usally dosn't have Debit Cards (eg PLUS, Cirrus, Mastero etc) so how can debit cards be used online when only credit cards are usally accepted?

My debit card is a Mastercard, so I would put "mastercard" in the field that asks what type of card it is.

Just remember that when you use a debit card you don't have the same fraud protection that you do with a regular Visa/MasterCard.
