Topic best card for traveling overseas Go to previous topic Go to next topic Go to higher level

I need to find a card for my 19 year old daughter who will be traveling to Europe this summer. We need to have 2 features: access to ATM's to obtain currency of the country she is in, and the ability to charge some items and save her cash.
I hear Visa is the most widely used, and we need to get one with a large enough bank (international) for it to work well. Any ideas? thanks, dav

Visa is a good bet. Any Visa will allow for the two features you've mentioned. Personally, I like the MBNA Quantum card. It has excellent benefits for travelers.

Whichever card you do get, be sure they have a collect number to call for customer service from overseas. 800 numbers do not work from Europe.

Another benefit of a major card, such as the MBNA card, is the ability to see all the recent transactions online. It kind of makes you feel like you're watching over your kid. :)

Good Luck and Happy Trails,
