My Girlfriend has no credit at all. She has a savings and a checking account. She has applied for numerous "Pre-Approved" credit cards and been denied. She has tried store cards and been denied. She doesn't want a secured card and doesn't want to pay hundreds of dollars in yearly/monthly fees just to have a credit card. Someone suggested that I cosign for her. I am just wondering exactly what that would do. How does me cosigning give her credit??

If you co-sign for your girlfriend, both of you are responsible for the charges that she incurs. If she is good about not spending more than she can afford, and you have a very stable relationship this could be an option. If she goes on a spending spree you may end up with some large charges for items that you have no use for.

How do you go about having someone co-sign for you? Is there a place on the application? I had thought about having my husband do that for me because he has "excellent" credit. Thanks.

For cards that offer the co-signing feature there is a place on the application for both individuals information. Most cards offer the option of adding a person as an authorized user, but this is different than co-signing in that the authorized user is not responsible to pay. With a co-signed account both people are responsible to pay. The account history affects both individuals credit history. I know that Peoples bank offers this option.
