Did you check out the "cards for new or damaged credit" in the browse section of this site?

One strategy would be to start building your credit history by applying for department store cards and obtaining overdraft protection on your bank account. For the time being you could use a debit card for instead of using your Canadian card.

Another idea would be to ask your new employer if you can get a business card through them. It may be worth a shot.
