Topic Trying to get a Credit Card Go to previous topic Go to next topic Go to higher level

A little background, I am 25, a college grad, have a very well paying job for my age and have never had a credit card in my life. currently I'm getting by with a check card but they are so insecure that I want a credit card. however my name and my father's name are very close and so much of his credit info was on my account and therefore I'd been having trouble. Now that that has been fixed I still seem to be having issues getting a card that doesn't charge all these fees.

I have a car note and have been current on that consistently and I have no bad marks on my credit (I have gotten all 3 credit reports). Any thoughts on some good options for a no fee credit card (APR is NOT important to me as I will not be carrying a balance) Trying desperately to get my credit up for a house purchase in a year or so. Thanks for any help, Pags

Which cards have you tried to apply for? And what were their reasons for turning you down?

A lot (over a period of time) but all this was prior to my credit being "fixed" in terms of not having my father's credit overlapping mine. My own bank wouldn't even give me a card (First Union). Generally what I get are either ambiguous reasons for the decline or "Insufficient Credit History." To directly answer your question though I remember trying Amex, Aria (this was how I found out my credit was overlapped with my dad's) and First Union.

It actually was a bit humorous to see a home mortgage on my credit history that I would have taken out when I was 8 years old.

That is an interesting situation. I would suggest that you may want to apply for a NextCard Visa. They offer customized terms so if you are not approved for a low interest rate card you should be offered another product. Another option would be to apply for an American Express Charge Card. You will need to pay this off each month, but you can build up a history and change over to a Blue Card or another product fairly easily. Check out these cards and others in the browse section.

Good Luck.
