Topic College Student Building Credit
Hi CreditCardMenu.com. I'm a senior in college and for many years I have been a signer on a credit card (Visa Platinum) with my dad. Now I'm graduating in a few months and I think I should try to build good credit. I looked into having the Visa card changed so that my dad and I are both co-owners of the card and then after a few months transfer full ownership to myself. It turns out this is procedurally a major pain in the butt. Should I go ahead and do this or should I seek other ways of building credit?
I having a savings account, but not a checking account. I have a good part time job and I have never been late in paying anything. I might try for a store credit card, but then I would have to buy stuff. I don't ever shop at department stores. I do most of my limited amount of shopping online.
Hi Jeff,
I would suggest that you use your student status to your advantage by applying for a "student card". Issuers are very happy to gain students as customers because in a short time the students will have full time jobs and will be making purchases such as computers and suits. In return if you are diligent about paying bills on time you will be able to start building your credit history and will put yourself in a good position to qualify for low APR cards. It is fairly easy to upgrade to a more attractive credit card with the same issuer once you have proven yourself to be a reliable bill payer.
FYI - Some issuers require that you be enrolled in a 4 year program to apply for their student cards. When applying for a student card you may include all sources of income (part-time work, parents, student loans, etc.) on your application.
I hope this helps.
Colin
